History of Oakville
The town of Oakville is said to have been founded by Colonel William Chisholm in 1857 when he acquired the land at the mouths of the 12 Mile (Bronte) and 16 Mile Creeks from the people of Mississauga. He then left the lands to his son and brother-in-law, Robert Kerr Chisholm and Thomas Merrick, respectively, who took advantage of the abundance of trees at the shores and two natural harbours to start shipbuilding and timber industries.
