At Empire Roofing, we have managed to maintain an edge over our competitors by not making any compromises during commercial roof installations and replacements in the community of Ajax.
Located in the Durham Region of Southern Ontario and the eastern part of the GTA, the town of Ajax has an estimated population of 109,600. It is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, around 25 km (16 miles) east of Toronto, and borders the City of Pickering to the east and south and the Town of Whitby to the west.
History of Ajax
The town was named after a Royal Navy warship called HMS Ajax that served in the Second World War. Before then, the area occupied by Ajax was a rural section of the township of Pickering comprising multiple small settlements and farms. In 1942, the Defence Industries Limited (DIL) established a munitions plant here – the largest military manufacturing facility in North America operating during the Second World War.
This huge war plant covered an area of about 3,000 acres, and had around 9,000 employees at its peak. The infrastructure required to operate DIL led to the establishment of the first roads, water and sewage treatment plants, and even schools in Ajax.
When the post office started operating, the town where DIL was located needed a name. A competition among the employees at DIL led to the selection of the name “Ajax” in honour of the renowned British warship. Many of Ajax streets got their names from those who served on the warship. When the war ended, the DIL was no longer needed, and many of its buildings were leased out to the University of Toronto Engineering School, leading to the establishment of a new population base around the institution.
Dowty Aerospace was the first industry to start operations in Ajax in 1949, and other industries followed. This made Ajax prosperous, leading to its incorporation as a town in 1955. Two decades later, sections of the Township of Pickering and the Town of Ajax amalgamated in 1974.
The Town of Ajax
There are many attractive aspects of Ajax, including the diverse housing stock, the biggest waterfront parkland in the GTA, easy access to Highway 401 that passes through the town centre, great public transit, the Greenwood Conservation Area for birdwatching and picnicking, and a massive regional shopping centre.
The crown jewel of the town is undoubtedly its 6 km waterfront trail that is paved and frequented by joggers and cyclists. The waterfront train joins with Carruthers Creek Trail system towards the east end of the town, and the Duffins Creek Trail towards the west end.
